Image Detail & Specifications

This photograph was taken two days before Christmas 1959. The Yenton was built on the corner of Sutton Road and Douay Road, a sort of midway point between Erdington and Wylde Green. The large pub was built just off the busy Chester Road so presumably benefited from passing trade in addition to serving the local community. The Yenton was built on a plot of land purchased from the Grant family in the Spring of 1924, though additional land was leased from Birmingham corporation. Operated by Mitchell's and Butler's, The Yenton pub opened for business on September 21st 1928. Frederick Ryder was the first manager of the pub. It is thought that the pub's name is a corruption of Yerdington, thought to be the name of a moated homestead in this locale.
