![]() The former Crown Inn is one of many former pubs to be found in
Towcester, a town once packed with drinking establishments. Thought to date from
1767, the building is Grade II listed. In the early 1840's the Crown Inn was
kept by John and Elizabeth Barnicle. She was a local woman but John Barnicle was
born in Upton around 1796. This couple were mine hosts for many years. The
building was later owned by the Hopcraft & Norris Brewery. A trade directory for
1890 lists Isaac Alfred Marlow as the licensee but by the time of the census
conducted in the following year he had moved to the
Dolphin Inn.
