A lovely inter-war photograph of the Abingdon Arms on the corner
of Abingdon Road West and Abingdon Villas. It would appear that
the graceful building was once influenced by the much-despised
window tax, a levy which was not repealed until 1851. The
Abingdon is still trading today as a gastro-pub. Herbert Hayden
was the licensee when this photograph was taken in the early-mid
1930's. His close competitor was the Kensington Arms on the
other side of the road. Previous licensees of the Abingdon Arms
include Henry Wilkin [1881], William Edward Griffiths [1891] and
Reuben Howard Barbey [1901].
