Tewkesbury - The Anchor |

The Anchor Hotel enjoys a commanding position on the corner of
High Street and Quay Street. Conducted in 1921, exterior
remodelling to the ground floor affords the building a square
appearance from street level but a glance at the upper floors
from the corner of Quay Street will reveal a clear demarcation
and frontage to the High Street. The building is accessed via
two fine pedimented doorways. Four uniform bays front the High
Street and, above, it is possible to determine the original
pitched roof line before a Georgian-type makeover. The interior
was once treated to a splendid Victorian refurbishment of
mahogany bars, substantial sized mirrors and tiling though the
appearance was spoilt when the pub was redecorated in 1971. The
date 1774 can be seen on the inn sign and this has been
confirmed as the period when the building was occupied by the
Sandilands family. |
