DPI-1095 An Edwardian image of the Abbey Church of St. Helena at Elstow. The church is the truncated remnant of a larger monastic church founded in 1078. The main body of the modern church is part of the abbey church's nave. The first three bays of the church from the east are Norman, part of Countess Judith's original abbey begun about 1075; the two western bays are of Early English style of about 1225. Overlooking Elstow green and Moot Hall the church has two stain glass windows connected with Bunyan, one depicts scenes from the Pilgrims Progress and the other the Holy War. It contains the communion table used when John Bunyan attended the church and the font where he was christened in 1628. Bunyan's mother, father and sister are buried in the graveyard. DPI-846 This photograph of Luton's parish church was taken in the Edwardian period. St.Mary's church is the largest in Bedfordshire. The building dates from the 14th and 15th centuries, though there was an earlier place of worship that was built around 931. The original church was founded by King Athelstan as an act of thanksgiving for victory over the Danes. The present church was founded on a new site in the early 12th century by Robert, Earl of Gloucester and the building was consecrated in 1137. Much of the church was rebuilt in the perpendicular style during the 15th century. A major restoration took place in the 1860's and extended in 1968. © Digital Photographic Images TECHNICAL DATA Date: c.1910 Source: Real Photo Postcard Maximum Size: 3422x2226 Pixels Maximum File Size: 966 Kb Format: JPEG Note: above sample image is 188 x 125 pixels Enlargement is 400 x 265 pixels
