![]() ![]() The name of this old pub in Winson Green commemorates the
windmill that once stood across Birmingham Heath. It was demolished to make way
for the Birmingham Union Workhouse. The windmill, although not ancient, was
active during the 18th century. The bleak nature of the area in former times
made it a good place for such a device. The valley created by the Hockley Brook
accentuates the height of the ground and the exposed nature of the area resulted
in little trouble turning the sails. Ironically, given the name of the pub, an
early publican called Thomas Stonely was himself a miller. The Leominster-born
licensee was recorded as a miller and publican in the census of 1861. Note: inn sign images are cropped for display - download often features full board with mount, edging and, in some case, the hanging bracket etc. |
