![]() ![]() This was
one of two Whitbread inn signs hanging outside The
Antelope in Hereford in 1992. The pub was formerly called the Railway Inn but
changed in 1978. The city adopted HMS Antelope in 1974 and has a Cadet Corps
training ship called Antelope. Unveiled by the commanding officer of HMS
Antelope, this inn sign shows the frigate at full speed. Designed by Vosper Thorycroft in collaboration with Yarrow Ltd., the Antelope was launched in March
1972 by Mrs Peter Kirk, wife of the then Under-Secretary of State for the Royal
Navy at Woolston, Southampton. Commissioned three years later, the
Rolls-Royce-powered frigate was based at Devonport. HMS Antelope was hit by
bombs on May 23rd 1982 during the Falklands conflict and sank on the following
day. The pub too has vanished - it closed down in 1997 and was demolished in
2003. Note: inn sign images are cropped for display - download often features full board with mount, edging and, in some case, the hanging bracket etc. |
