![]() ![]() This signboard is taken from a Wiltshire collection but it is
not sure if it is the Hope and Anchor in Salisbury or whether it was a sign for
the Hope and Anchor at Trowbridge. Like the Hope and Anchor, this sign is
derived from the words of St. Paul (Hebrews 6:19): "We have this as a sure and
steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope...." though it was applied to boat vessels
as a kind of spiritual guide and prayer for the safe return of a vessel. Indeed,
the spare anchor on a boat or ship was dubbed the 'hope anchor.' The plight of
the Pilgrims has been told many times in that they dropped anchor before their
planned destination of Virginia as they were running low on beer and other
rations. Hence their proclamation at Newfoundland of "We anchor in hope." Here
we see a further piece of symbolism in that the female dressed in sailor's
attire is holding a beacon of hope. Note: inn sign images are cropped for display - download often features full board with mount, edging and, in some case, the hanging bracket etc. |
