![]() ![]() A John Smith's inn sign for The Alma in Chesterfield. The pub is named after
the Battle of Alma which took place during the Crimean War in 1854. The Alma is
a river in the Ukraine. It was here that the Allied forces won their first
battle against the Russians. Subsequently, the name was widely adopted by pubs
throughout England. In addition, streets were also named to commemorate the
event. Indeed, the daughters of the men who fought there were given the name.
This inn sign features the Crimea War Medal which was instituted on December
15th 1854. Featuring a distinctive ornate oak leaf and acorn pattern, the medal
includes a bar for Alma. Other bars were issued for Balaklava, Inkermann,
Sebastopol and Azoff. Note: inn sign images are cropped for display - download often features full board with mount, edging and, in some case, the hanging bracket etc. |
