![]() ![]() This sign by Ansell's Brewery of Birmingham is a slightly
different take on the traditional Albion inn sign, focusing on the British Bulldog looking outwards, perhaps defiantly independent. Although captured on
film in 1990, the sign dates from the 1980's and could reflect the political
atmosphere of the period. The Thatcher regime was arguably Euro-sceptic and
seemingly always at odds with the French and, in particular, Jacques Delors, the
architect of the single currency . The newspaper famously ran with the front
page headline of "Up Yours Delors." The Bulldog Spirit as depicted on this sign
is commonly perceived to date back to the Second World War and Winston Churchill. Note: inn sign images are cropped for display - download often features full board with mount, edging and, in some case, the hanging bracket etc. |
