![]() ![]() The signboard of the Admiral Rodney Hotel at Southwell in
Nottinghamshire. This British naval officer was quite a popular choice for
publicans and breweries when choosing a name for their establishment in the late
18th and early 19th centuries. Born in 1718, George Brydges Rodney, later the
1st Baron Rodney, KB., first went to sea at the age of fourteen and enjoyed a
distinguished career in the Royal Navy. Involved in many a battle, he became
notorious for his actions in the American War of Independence, particularly his
victory over the French at the Battle of the Saintes in 1782. This finished the
French threat to Jamaica and later led to better peace terms. When he returned
to Britain, Rodney was hailed as a hero and made a peer. Note: inn sign images are cropped for display - download often features full board with mount, edging and, in some case, the hanging bracket etc. |
