A beer label for a strong winter ale produced by Fremlin's, a
brewery founded around 1790 and bought by Ralph Fremlin in 1861. Located in
Maidstone's Earl Street, the Pale Ale Brewery was formerly operated by John
Heathorn. Fremlin's became one of the largest brewing concerns in the south-east
after expanding its estate by acquiring other breweries. In 1929 they acquired
their rivals in Maidstone when buying the Lower Brewery of Isherwood, Foster &
Stacey Ltd. During the next decade the company expanded beyond the county
boundary. For example, in 1938 they bought out Harris Browne Limited, a small
brewery located in Barnet. During the following year Fremlin's, took over the Adams' Brewery
of
Halstead in Essex. This firm operated a larger estate of 46 tied houses.
Fremlin's themselves were swallowed up by the Whitbread empire in 1967, by which
time the company controlled 714 public houses. Brewing at the Pale Ale Brewery
ceased in 1972 and much of the buildings were demolished around 1976. Further
demolition on the site was conducted in 1981 and one of Maidstone's industrial
heritage sites was lost forever. Other Images that may be of interest.... |
