A beer label produced in the 1950's for Daniell and
Sons' Dark Dan, a
beer made at the Castle Brewery in Colchester. The Daniell
family were involved in brickmaking in the early 19th century, and perhaps
earlier. A branch of the family is thought to have started brewing in the late
18th century. However, it is more certain that Thomas Daniell, also a brickmaker
and coal merchant, was producing beer at Spreading Oak Farm in the 1820's. His
sons joined the firm in the 1870's and, together they operated three separate
breweries around the Colchester area. For example, the company acquired the East
Donyland Brewery at Rowhedge, after which they used the site as a maltings. The
three concerns were formally established as Daniell and Sons Limited. Employing
more than forty personnel by 1900, the company expanded by acquiring local
rivals. For example, the Gravel End Brewery at Coggeshall was acquired in 1907
and Bernard Cuddon at Old Heath was snapped up in 1912. By the time that the
company was acquired by Truman, Hanbury and Buxton in 1958, the
company controlled an estate of 150 public houses. Following the takeover,
brewing at West Bergholt was stopped and the site was used as a distribution
depot. This too was closed in 1985 and some of the old brewery buildings were
later converted into residential apartments. Other Images that may be of interest.... |
