Seen here in the livery of Atkinson's Brewery, the Hydraulic Inn stood on the corner of Lodge Road and All Saints Street and, subsequently, was a very popular watering hole for employees of Scibban's Bakery which stood across the road. It was a neat-looking building with uniform fenestration. The corner entrance was used for the main bar whilst the first door on All Saints Street served as the access to the outdoor. Patrick O'Neil was the licensee when this photograph was taken. The pub closed in 1970 and was later demolished. A great photograph of the Royal Exchange in Park Road around 1930. This shot captures not only the fine-looking pub but the whole row including the newsagent's shop on the end. Walter Harris was the publican when this photograph was captured. He kept the old beerhouse for Mitchell's and Butler's. The pub served beer for the final time on March 1st 1970. The Warstone was located on the west side of Icknield Street on the corner of Camden Street. It was lost in the early 1970's when the road was widened. A building of some antiquity, the Warstone Inn was given a facelift in 1889 - probably the year the ground floor fenestration was inserted. The work was commissioned by Newsome Thwaite who had acquired the pub built on the estate of Sir Thomas Gooch. Earlier in the decade the pub was run by the wine and spirit merchant Richard Gibson. The Warstone Inn was later operated by Peter Walker of Burton, Atkinson's of Aston, Mitchell's and Butler's and finally Bass. The pub closed on September 28th 1971. Like the Warstone Inn [see DPI-288 left] the Royal Mint stood on the west side of Icknield Street and was also removed for the "improvement" of the road - the motor car has a lot to answer for! In this shot a Ford Cortina is about to overtake the No.8 bus. As the pub's name suggests, the building stood across from The Mint. The pub was on the corner of Hingeston Street which can be seen to the left in this photograph. The name of Walter Forbes Hepburn can be seen above the door - he was the licensee between November 1964 and July 1967. The pub has the livery of Atkinson's Brewery. The Royal Mint had earlier been operated by the Langley-based Showell's Brewery. The Rose Villa Tavern stands in the ticking heart of the Jewellery Quarter. Literally. The famous Chamberlain Memorial Clock stands in the middle of the road junction and would be just a few feet from the photographer. Mitchell's and Butler's lavished £15,000 on this property when they commissioned the architectural firm of Wood and Kendrick to design a new building between 1919-20. They incorporated some fine architectural features, some of which have survived. Of particular note are the stained glass windows and interior tiling. The Lord Clifden, like many of the old shops on Great Hampton Street, was extended up to the pavement. Many of the houses originally had gardens or land fronting the street. The original building dating from the late 18th century can be seen behind. This was not always a pub and was only converted into a beerhouse in the mid-19th century. The walls of the rear beer garden provide clues to the existence of large workshops that were utilised by a number of firms who traded behind the main building. In the early-mid 19th century there were clockmakers and silversmiths trading from the premises. The beerhouse suffered extensive damage following a fire in 1921 but was repaired. The Minerva Vaults on Great Hampton Row can be seen here in the livery of Atkinson's of Aston. William Whitehurst was the licensee at the time of this photograph. He was the gaffer for Mitchell's and Butler's between March 1965 and September 1968 when George Pragnell took over the reins. During the Second World War, the Minerva Vaults was extensively damaged by a bomb which landed on a house across the road. Unlike most pubs in the locality, the Railway Tavern on Park Road has survived into the 20th century and had a small collection of railway memorabilia on the interior walls for customers to enjoy. This photograph dates from around 1920 when Herbert Whitman was the licensee. During much of the late 19th century the Railway Tavern was run by the Wilson family. John Wilson hailed from Yorkshire but kept the pub with his Warwickshire-born Elizabeth. The White Horse Cellars is located on the corner of Constitution Hill and Northwood Street. Replacing an earlier White Horse, this c.1890 building is the only known pub design by the eminent architect J. A. Chatwin. Another oddity is that the pub was once operated by Flowers Brewery of Stratford - most unusual for Birmingham. Mitchell's and Butler's later acquired the property. Home to the likes of the Lion's Den Jazz Club, The Red Lion on Warstone Lane has survived into the 21st century when most neighbouring pubs have been lost. The frontage is essentially the same though the historic image looks much better with the etched and stained-glass windows plus massive lanterns. Shropshire-born Joseph Lea was the owner-publican of the Red Lion Hotel in the late 19th century. Indeed, he and his wife Elizabeth ran the hotel for around forty years.
