The ruins of the old Manor House at Elstow taken around 1912. Utilising materials from the old convent, the Jacobean mansion was built by Thomas Hillersdon. The property was the residence of the Hillersdon family. Of the ruins pictured here there was a porch, consisting of a round-headed doorway, flanked on each side by two Doric pilasters. Only the bases of the pilasters remained of an upper floor. A view of the so-called "mammoth presses" at the Vauxhall Press Shop. The company was founded 1857 by Alexander Wilson and was originally based in the Vauxhall area of London in 1857. The business was originally called Alex Wilson and Company but changed to the Vauxhall Iron Works. It was not until 1903 that Vauxhall built its first motor car, a five-horsepower model steered using a tiller. This photograph of Luton's parish church was taken in the Edwardian period. St.Mary's church is the largest in Bedfordshire. The building dates from the 14th and 15th centuries, though there was an earlier place of worship that was built around 931. The original church was founded by King Athelstan as an act of thanksgiving for victory over the Danes. The present church was founded on a new site in the early 12th century by Robert, Earl of Gloucester and the building was consecrated in 1137. Much of the church was rebuilt in the perpendicular style during the 15th century. When a tower was added in the early 19th century the walls collapsed and a new church was erected between 1829-31.
